LX v Iceni Rex Match Report 11/4/21
Hockey is back, Hockey is back, Hooray!
This was the first stand-alone LX fixture to be played following the ending of lockdown 3 and after a six month lay-off it was, perhaps, a surprisingly good game with the LX squad putting in a commendable performance against a strong Iceni Rex side. Perhaps more importantly than being a good game, it was a very enjoyable occasion with everyone obviously delighted to be back on the hockey pitch.
The fixture against Iceni Rex was new to the LX calendar, but I suspect it won’t be the last. Iceni are an East based O60s invitation side who have been finalists in the EH O60s Cup for the past two years. Thanks are due to Richard Boutcher and Tony Elston for their work in setting up the fixture from the Iceni end. I must admit that, going into the game, I thought that Iceni with a younger average age might be too good for us. As it turned out it was a fairly even game with both sides rustily missing good chances before Iceni broke the deadlock late in the game and that is all credit to the effort put in by the whole LX squad, including two new members making their debuts for LX, Colin Warne and Chris Bollig.
LX came close to scoring on several occasions with Richard Boutcher in the Iceni goal doing well to deny Peter Glading on one occasion, Colin Warne striking a short corner just past Iceni’s post and both George Howard and Chris Thornhill going agonisingly close with deflections. Iceni also created chances but on the occasions that they got their radar right they found Cliff Peck in fine form. Cliff was deservedly awarded the LX MOM award. However, with ten minutes to go, and with LX legs tiring a little, Tim Smith scored with a short corner strike for Iceni, then, whilst LX chased an equaliser, Iceni scored a second on the break, right at the final whistle. So, a 2-0 defeat but a very creditable LX performance.
Unfortunately, with Covid restrictions still in place, it wasn’t possible to repair to the bar to re-live key moments from the game, but everyone agreed it had been great to get back on the hockey pitch and all were looking forward to further games in the coming months – perhaps even with post-match lubrication as well. Finally to mention that £120 was collected on the day for the LX nominated charity, MNS.
