This event was always going to be competitive with several new members playing in their first event with LX and looking to impress.

The game was played over 4 – off, 20 minute quarters, and both teams were grateful to have a break every 20 mins as the weather conditions were very testing as it was so hot !

Both teams made strongs starts, but it was the White team who got the upper hand in the 1st quarter, and popped in 2 well worked short corners, finished well by Steve Crute and Dave Margerison.

The Reds went into the first break a little shell shocked. Roz and John Housham went to work on the team and the second quarter was a different story, as they gained control and got their first goal seconds after the re-start, and continued to dominate and were rewarded with a deserved equaliser. Paul Bateson was one of the scorers after a scramble in the D. And the other goal was scored by Nick King.

So all square at the half way point ( 2 – 2 )

Tactical changes were made by both sides to gain any advantages they could, and the 3rd quarter was a more even session, with both sides creating chances. Martin Ferrett pulling out several good saves, but was not able to keep out the only goal of the 3rd quarter which was scored by Kevin White from the penalty spot.

The final quarter was the hardest test for all, as the intense heat was now sapping the legs. And concentration was vital. Both teams gave their all and with the Whites holding a slender 3 – 2 lead, the next goal was crucial. And it was the White team who netted the next goal, with a good flowing move, Kevin White was on hand to finish well.

With the clock ticking down, there was to be no way back for the Reds and at the final whistle the Whites had run out with a 4 – 2 victory.

The debutants all played well, and great credit must go to the elder players who did really well in the intense heat, and some of them had no break throughout !!

A huge thanks go to Mike Nixon for umpiring throughout, and Chris Randall and Robin Wilson for sharing the umpiring at the other end, and playing too.

And Chris Randall and the staff at Wakefield for organising a great event and hospitality at Wakefield, which was much appreciated by all.
