LX O60s 2 Thistles O60s 1

Most of us had a gruelling trip to Dundee the day before followed by a relaxing meal at the Mesopotamia restaurant with some of the LX O65s in the evening. Hats off to Jan Ahmed for organising this.

On Saturday we met at 10am for our first game at 10:40am. It seemed that none of us had played with more than 4 or 5 players of the 14 man squad before so it was questionable as to how well we were going to play together. There was also a mixture of age groups as several O65s had been drafted in to help with numbers. Captain and organiser Nic Crocker soon had our playing positions sorted, and introduced the injured Rob Glover who was to organise our substitutions, very smoothly it turned out. After a gentle warm up we were away.

It took only a few minutes for us to develop a pattern of play and mount attacks, mainly helped by  Thistles mistakes which resulted in us missing a couple of good chances. It was very encouraging, however, and we were soon a goal up scored by Martin Wright who placed a “pass” towards the goal which was helped in by a “mesmerised” Thistles defender.

What could have been 5 minutes later Terry Duffy added the second from an attacking move down the right which left the Thistles defence outnumbered. We took advantage of our extra player, not always easy!

We were cruising now and feeling well pleased with our passing game but of course this is where things always falter. The Thistles managed to get a shot in from the right hand edge of the circle which Fraser Black deflected reverse stick past Andy Cox our goalie. It could have gone anywhere but just had to choose the goal.

The second half came and neither side managed a score. We played as well, if not better than, the first half and despite a lot of pressure round the Thistles circle we didn’t succeed. In fact we didn’t even have a penalty corner in the whole game. Our defence was less and less troubled as the game progressed and we finished 2-1 up. A very competent start to the festival and there were no worries about the team gelling together.
