A most enjoyable weekend in Dundee for the LX O70 team. We finished up with a squad of 15 after a few late sign ups , many thanks to them , and the odd administrative problem which as it turned out worked about right with a few injuries and absences due to travel issues. We had a good balanced squad who gelled together well to give positive results. We won our first game on Friday evening against Welsh Dragons 5-1 , on Saturday 4-0 against Scottish Thistles and on Sunday 4-0 against Irish Shamrocks.
Vice Captain Martin Ferrett didn’t have a lot to do in goal averaging two clearances a game and it was good he also played for the LX O65 to give him some more to do. The defence was generally Keith Richardson , Andy Holden , Andy Hogg and Mike Rushmere who also played in midfield. They dealt competently with excursions into our territory and had time to support the midfield . The midfield of John Tripp , Peter Newnham, Richard Slator, Sarbjit Dehl and David Holgate. orchestrated good moves for the forwards Parmjit Bolina , Balbir Singh , Mike Tucker , Manu Kokri and a limping yours truly to create good opportunities which without good performances from opposition keepers and some more clinical finishing we could have scored more. Sarbjit was our top scorer with six goals , Mike T scored three and other scorers were John , Balbir , Richard and Peter.
The side was a pleasure to captain with everyone supporting each other and I appreciated the positive emails received from players afterwards. We had good evening socials , well organised by the captain of vice David Holgate on Friday evening , and the wonderful dinner organised by our hosts on Saturday evening with over 250 present. Such a pleasure to have that sort of event again. I cannot thank the main organiser Mike Mcinally and his team enough , fantastic hospitality and organisation.
Finally thanks to our physio Mitchell , recruited from the Lakes weekend , whose efforts kept a number of our players playing through the weekend , even if my torn quad was too recent to be sorted.
We really look forward to next year with the Scottish Thistles Masters and hopefully we can organise a similar festival in England in the future. It was nice to play relaxed festival hockey without all the regulations of tournament hockey.
