Gatfers 2 – LX 2

Persistent rain at Exeter failed to dampen the players spirits and LX and Gatfers set to with energetic enthusiasm. After errors on both sides LX scored first, against the run of play, when Patrick Martin took a short pass from Brian Stokes and struck a firm shot to wrong foot the Gatfers goalie, Patrick Maher. Gatfers equalised with a powerful strike by Dave Cole into the roof of the net.

In the second half Gatfers played more creative hockey but LX took the lead again when the ball came to rest in front of the goal line after deflecting off the goalpost. John Tripp was marginally quicker to react than the crowd of surrounding defenders, and managed to get the ball across the line (just). Play was halted while Garry Adams was treated for a head wound from an opponent`s stick. On resumption Gatfers secured the draw with a fine team move and first-time shot by Tim Morgan.

This was a good result for LX. Gatfers were a skillful side with some younger players but missed some good chances which they created, or were thwarted by the excellent performance of John Chong in goal for LX. Other highlights for LX included skill and calm authority from captain Gavin Stones in defence, the midfield work of Brian Stokes and Tony Neeve, and untiring perseverance from John Tripp and Bob Whitell in the front line.

Thanks are due to Bill Goodridge and Guy Rudolf as umpires.

The day was completed with a post-match reunion and meal with the Isca and LX 060 teams at the Devon and Exeter Squash Club.
